PCLinuxOS is an English only live CD initially based on Mandrake Linux that runs entirely from a bootable CD. Data on the CD is uncompressed on the fly, allowing up to 2GB of programs on one CD including a complete X server, KDE desktop, OpenOffice.org and many more applications all ready to use. In addition to the live CD, you can also install PCLinuxOS to your hard drive with an easy-to-use livecd-installer. Additional applications can be added or removed from your hard drive using a friendly apt-get front end via Synaptic.

Looking for your particular Linux flavor can be a tiresome affair. There are the mainstreams, and of course the most popular ones like Fedora and Suse just to name a couple. Then there is Ubuntu and Knoppix which are a smart way to try out the distribution before installing it on a user's hard disk.

The problem with these distribution is that there are either too many CDs to burn or the installations (especially on LiveCDs with exceptions like SLAX and DSL) are so bloated that a user specnds countless hours either trying out all the applications, or removing ones that aren't attractive or useful.

PCLinuxOS, or PCLOS (http://www.pclinuxos.com/) as it is fondly called by its users recently came out with a barebone version called PCLinuxOS MiniMe 0.93. What's so special about it? Well, at 285Mb that includes a basic KDE desktop, 2.6.15-oci3 kernel, PCLOS Control Center, the Synaptic software installer and a customized X.Org server, it sure to catch the attention of many distro-hoppers.

But the best thing about it is the customization. After installing MiniMe, a user can opt to download their preferred applications from the PCLOS repositories. No more uninstalls, no more broken dependencies, and no more what is what?!

As a user of PCLOS, I have a great deal of good to say about it. Here's a link to another good review - http://www.capnkirby.com/MiniME.html. And if you're ready to try one of the world’s up and coming providers of a Linux Desktop Solution, get your hands wet at ftp://ftp.uwsg.indiana.edu/linux/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/live-cd/english/preview/pclinuxos-p93-minime.iso.

Want to try it before you install it? Go ahead, try out the PCLinuxOS live CD. You'll find the p92 to be quite a wonderful OS, or if you're looking for something a bit lighter on system resources, try the p93 minime.
After you've installed PCLinuxOS to your hard drive, you'll find it to be amazingly easy to add the applications you need with Synaptic package manager. The KDE desktop that comes with this distro is 'ready to go' as well as beautiful (my opinion) right out of the box, but if you're interested in tweaking it or adding more desktop backgrounds and screensavers, you'll find it easy to do.
In my opinion, this is the perfect distro for the home user who is looking to switch over to Linux. All of the programs that a home user may need are either already installed or are easily installed.
What are you waiting for? Go ahead, try it. You'll be glad you did.

I'm using it now! I find PCLinux to be stable and a pleasure to work with.
PCLinux is wonderful for newer systems and hardware. I'm not big on words but I'm big on this distro. Try it! You will like it!!!

i installed pclinux on my laptop, it was working fine, till oneday it crashed!!! I switched the latop on and off coupleof times still the laptop is not booting up, why did this happen. Laptop is working fine but when it boots up it gives a file not found message and hence cannot boot up all the way. In estimation I would say it boots up 5 to 10 % only, any bright person know why and how to resolve, please email me on rajesh_patel@btinternet.com

It just works. I like it for the ease of install and customizations I can make to my themes and splash screens, etc. PCLinux let's me make my PC truly mine. PS: I dual boot with Ubuntu.
