| | I have tried several different versions of linux distributions and liked many of them. But I like Ubuntu well enough that I now have it installed on three of my computers. It has all the software I was looking for and the support pages explain how to get them to do everything I wanted. It is also a lot easier to add any other packages you may want than most of the others I've tried. Thanks for the wonderful site, I'm always glad to see more support for linux. |

| | I'm desparately looking of a place to ask a new question. Why is that so hard? I've tried maybe six of seven distros of Linux and none of them has let me connect to internet. Is it really that hard to do or is there something wrong with my computer?
I've spent hours downloading and burning iso files and I get nowhere because I can't get the internet. Can someone give me a clue about what is going on? So far unbuntu is the only one that has allowed me to connect to CDrom, usb, but still will not allow internet connection
Thanks

| | I like the distro too, clean and simple. Almost too easy to install, since the only option you get is where to install, and nothing else. I have also experienced connection problems with Ubuntu. To get the installation not to stop at the apt config at 82% in to the installation process, I had to pull out the network cable. Just telling the installation program that I didn't want to connect or setup a connection didn't help. I had to do it the hard-ware way...
But now it works fine, apart from trubbles using the web... (instant messageing works fine though). |

| | I am a total newbie and started with knoppix. When I decided to put a distro on my HD I first used Freespire but had a hard time installing things from there CNR library.
I put on Kubuntu 6.10 but for some reason me and the adept package manager didn't get along so well, I found it buggy to buggy for newbies.
Then I tried the Ubuntu since all the software on there repository seemed to be written for gnome. I found it a lot easier to use the Synaptic Package Manager and still had to work on adding all the codecs and proprietaries for it (Found this sight VERY helpful http://www.cs.cornell.edu/~djm/ubuntu/#packages ) but for a novice such as myself I think it is great! |

but its nevertheless a excellent distro for noobs |

| | I started on SuSE 9.1 but eventually messed the installation up so badly I had to blow the partition away. I played around with Knoppix but never installed. Then a friend who uses Linux at work recommended Ubuntu to me. It installed first time and found my Windows network without any difficulty (only one of the machines though). Other than that it has been a dream to use - very intuitive and friendly. |

| | I too tried several of the latest Linux distros including Fedora, Mandriva 2007 and Ubuntu and have been completely frustrated in that none of them allows me to connect to the internet, yet when running Windows that was not a problem. Indeed Mandriva didn't even recognise my floppy disk drive, yet at least Ubuntu will do that much, and it works with my new printer whereas Mandriva and Fedora were inconsistent. One would have no problem printing from Gimp but wouldn't even twitch when I tried to print a simple word processed document. Adding new software has been a nightmare and has still beaten me using all three distros. I am a reasonably proficient user of PCs and have tutored at university level, but Linux seems to only for highly computer literate users if one wants to do the simple tasks taken for granted using Windows. I wanted to get away from Microsoft for ethical, philosophical and financial reasons and was highly motivated to embrace Linux, but I'm sad to say that I'm going to have to make Bill Gates a little wealthier and return to the fold. Why all the hoo ha about Linux being so wonderful if it can't even accomplish tasks that we all take for granted and should expect from an OS if that system is being publicised so widely and praised so highly? |

| | A great distro that I have been thoroughly impressed with so far. Ubuntu was the first linux based OS that I was successfully able to get my linksys wifi card working with. This is the first time I have attempted to run Linux exclusively and couldn't be happier with the performance and ease of use that Ubuntu offers. On the occasions where I have needed help, the forums have proven to be real lifesavers and I have always been able to find an answer to my questions. After a little more than a month, I finally feel that I have broken free of the oppressive and rediculous yoke of Microsoft hanging around my neck. Never again will I ever be forced to buy bits in a box and have my computer held hostage by Bill and the boys! |

| | Ubuntu is the first OS that without problems runs on all my computers, including laptop! Even on my oldest computer it runs fast. It does need for you to split up your HD yourself (unless you want to run only one OS of course), but that's not much of a problem using Gparted. Great looking and performing program! |

| | Ubuntu 7.04 as desktop workstation is admirable, but why after following all the instructions it refuses to recognize the BASH command set is my main concern. The system confirms that BASH is present yet only a handful of BASH commands execute. SUDO also does not execute properly. Eventually I need command over the operational environment so I can run Japanese Ubuntu desktops. Help! Any help please! |

| | ubuntu 7.04 was first distro i tried and had good luck using it as live, no problems connecting to internet using the firefox in it. have had a number of probs installing to where i want it, an external hdd. it would do well until the final step then send me back to the partitioner to redo the entire hdd when i wanted it on a small pre-set partition. once it did so, it wiped the entire disk and wanted the entire hdd to install, causing a loss of data, not serious but very frustrating. final, just decided to use as a live cd rather than install in a way i didn't want it to. |

| | What can I say Beryl is pretty. Hotter than Windows Vista by far. Even With all it's bells and whistles Vista can't come close to these visual effects. The only thing I don't like about the live CD is the lack of ability to write to a windows partition. It's a pain unless you have a thumb drive. Other than that it's a clean distro of which I look forward to seeing new versions. |

| | I have used different Ubuntus moslty 7.10 ubuntu, edubuntu, xubuntu not to much kubuntu... I just installed 8.04, installing with the desktop CD worked just fine. I installed xubuntu and then installed the newest KDE(4)as well. I have only had the new system a day so I have not really formed an opinion other than... I tried twice with different Downloads of the alternet version, both seemed to install fine but system was not able to boot. |

| | Ubuntu is by far and wide the easiest to install and use out of all the Linux Distros. It takes you by the hand and when something does go wrong it tells you what is wrong and usually how to fix it.
Back that up with the stability of Linux and apt-get Debian repositories and you have it all. I have my parents, my girl friend, and others running Ubuntu because they know nothing about computers and it is easy to use. If you want your grandma to use linux this is for you.
Hardware support is also amazing. I have never had a hardware issue with Ubuntu. |
