With Gentoo you can build your entire system from source, using your choice of optimizations. You have complete control over what packages are or aren't installed. Gentoo provides you with numerous choices, so you can install Gentoo to your own preferences, which is why Gentoo is called a meta-distribution.

Gentoo's performance is generally noticably faster than binary builds on the same computer. I have extended the "happiness factor" for the speed of my aging hardware simply by using the compiled Gentoo distro rather than others with precompiled software.

the programs are very slow to install but you gain loads of speed after that

I've been a long time Gentoo user - love it. The user community, forums, etc, are the best I've experienced in so far.

With this version 2006.1 install, the wizards can cause problems. Do a straight and basic install with the wizard or find the "Alternate install" guide in the Gentoo Handbooks area. Try not to change any settings from the defaults if you're using the wizard on the install CD. This is called a Stage 3 installation. Once that's done you can make all the changes you like.

3 final suggestions:

1) Be prepared to read docs and forums. This is an advanced distro with huge possibilities - don't spend too long getting bogged down - Search the forums, read the docs, then ask for help.
2) Compiling on older systems can be a slow and painful process. If you have multiple Linux systems available, use DISTCC. If you only have one system - use the pre-compiled software for all your large packages.
3) If you're trying to gain a deep understanding of Linux, install a VMWare virtual machine and play on that. Take snapshots - mess with stuff. That way you won't bork a physical install and have to redo it.

Great distro - get yer learn on..!
