MEPIS Linux is a desktop Linux system that is also easy to configure as a dedicated server. It is designed for both personal and business purposes. It includes cutting-edge features such as a live/installation/recovery CD, automatic hardware configuration, NTFS partition resizing, ACPI power management, WiFi support, anti-aliased TrueType fonts, a personal firewall, KDE, and much more.

This distribution, while not the first Live CD (we can credit KNOPPIX for many of the Live CD technology we take for granted), it is one of the first, if not THE first Live CD that utilized a desktop icon, "Install Me", then asked only simple questions, then just installed. Yeah, other distributions are more flexible. Maybe a few are faster (although MEPIS is quite responsive). Some may be more bleeding edge with the latest software releases. But SimplyMEPIS is no nonsense, loads initially as a Live CD, can be installed effortlessly as a desktop system, then simply gets the job done.
It is a good, solid desktop system with few flaws, a responsive community, and a small but amazing development team, headed by Warren Woodford, who earlier worked on the NeXT OS used as much of the basis for Mac OS X.
Usability is good. People have complained about background art, but that has been improved (that is not important to me, what is important is an immediately usable system that can be easily extended, and here SimplyMEPIS excels.

I second virtually everything written by masinick. I've used MEPIS on an old Gateway P4 that used to run win98 and on a new 64 bit MacBook (both in Boot Camp and in Parallels). This is an outstanding distro with a simple installation and setup using the reliable grub bootloader. Once installed, MEPIS is arguably the most efficient adoption of KDE I've seen, and this should only get better with time: version 7 is currently (Sept. 2007) in Beta 4, and Woodford and his team are also working on improvement to their 64 bit product, which is not as solid a performer as their more robustly tested 32-bit OS. I'll be testing the final betas and RCs for v. 7 over the coming weeks and will file reports here and on my blog, dailyrevolution.net. Bottom line: particularly if you're a Windows switcher looking for an efficient, intuitive, and sturdy distro for your first Linux experience, MEPIS comes with my highest recommendation.

SimplyMEPIS 7.0 is undergoing testing and it has not been released yet. Several minor issues are being properly resolved before releasing the software. Two things should be noted though. First, the test software is actually quite good, and very usable, even with the test flaws. Second, the community and the developers are very thorough about testing and resolving problems. I find even base levels made available well before final release are generally quite usable. Expect SimplyMEPIS 7.0 to be very good once it is released.
