Eclipse is an integrated code editor/compiler/linker suite developed and open-sourced by IBM. It can be used for Java and Swing development as well as C++ with the appropriate plug-in. The interface is similar to Microsoft Visual Studio or Bloodshed Dev/C++. Eclipse requires the official Sun Java Runtime Environment 1.4.2+.

Migrating from Visual Studio under Windows, first to Eclipse under Windows where I learned java - no, there is no simple drag and drop, and I had to put in a bit of effort and frustration using JPanels and LayoutManagers, but all in all, this is a great IDE - and I am comparing it to JBuilder, Sun Beans and IBM Java Creator (which inexplicably produced tens of files and a dir structure for I have no idea why and for what!?). I'm on my way (sung to the proclamers tuner), I'm on my way to harpy ness, Eclispse has stuck with me though this...blah - ok, at least on gripe: whenever I want to switch project I have to log out and back in, and my tutor at uni doesn't even know how to get around it, but the compiler is sound, and the error messages are at least if not more informative that MS (although I guess they're from the jdk, and not eclipse). Also, its easy on the eyes, and fairly easy to migrate from MS Visual Studio.
Happy Coding all!

Eclipse is a great, highly functional editor with autocomplete, syntax checking, and more. I've found it pretty easy to learn -- and learn it you should, because it's considered industry standard in many areas. The one and only feature I could wish for that it doesn't seem to have is the ability to create GUI's the lazy drag n drop way Visual Studio spoiled us with, but I that's not hard to do without.

Eclipse is great. I'm a Computer Science student and it's all I've needed for all my Java programming.

Eclipse is a great IDE, It took me a while to get accustomed to the controls and the way projects are created etc but now I cant imagine how did I do programming in Java without it. Also with the new Visual Editor Plugin gone are the days when we had to hand code and make GUIs.
