Nethack is the grandfather of dungeon crawling games such as Diablo. You must make your way through dozens of randomly-generated dungeons killing monsters, picking up loot, buying gear, and searching for the final prize: the Amulet of Yendor. Since the dungeons are random, the game is different every time. Nethack has been in development for 20+ years, so the sheer number of things you can do in the game is immense. Optionally, there are graphical front-ends for the game that use Qt or GTK+ libraries and give you icons instead of text to represent your character and the dungeons/monsters/items you discover.
