Based on the Doom3 engine, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is a large, extensible first-person shooter. You can side with the Axis or the Allies, and five different classes with a fairly large arsenal of weapons and abilities are available for both sides.

The game is objective oriented, usually involving stealing an item or blowing something up. 6 default maps are included, and a huge array of player-made maps is available on the web. In addition to the huge amount of maps, a good few modifications are also available.

The game is closed-source with an SDK available for making modifications. Installation is based on a bash-script. Root permissions are required (?) when using PunkBuster.

  Dreadful

Fedora Core 6 simply associated .RUN files with text-editors so forget any chance of point and click install, other disto's will be as bad.

You need to be a Gentoo type to get it running in short. If this doesn't bother you, you'll be OK, if you just want to get on and play, you won't, you'll need to work for a month to get it sorted.

In short, yet again, another crossplatformer purely aimed at code-monkeys

I wouldn't agree at all, it's a loki installer for all distros. simply 'sh' it in a terminal, or associate the file with 'sh' when asked what application you want to run it with. It's a graphical installer similar to Windows installers. Execution is disabled by default for any file, as is the Unix way.

I recently got Steam: Counter Strike working on my computer, without sound support. I pretty much stopped playing it because the graphics were weird and I prefered sound..I downloaded Wolf:ET last night, started it, and all it did was bring the 'Steam is updating' splash up, then all of a sudden log me in...Kinda freaking out. The exact same thing happens when I try to start a new game I downloaded called 'Warsow". I'm 99.999% positive I downloaded the Linux version for both games; I have no idea what the problem is. I just got this Linux computer during christmas, and have been using my slow-as-hell-but-windowsXP-ftw computer, so I'm pretty new to Linux. Wondering if anyone can help, Thanks.

I'll try the splashdamage link; I downloaded it last from some linux gaming website > Fileshack
